All children who live permanently in Finland must take part in basic education. Basic education starts in the fall of the year the child turns seven. Basic education lasts for 9 years (i.e. grades 1-9) and is meant for children between 7 to 16 years old.
Elementary schools in Finland consists of grades 1-6. In Toholampi, primary education occurs at four elementary schools: Kleemola, Viitoja, Sykäräinen, and Herman Ojala. Usually, a child starts at the school closest to their home.
Junior high schools in Finland teach grades 7-9. Toholampi junior high school is Kuusisto school, which is located in Toholampi center.
All materials used in basic education, including books, are free. Pupils get one free warm meal a day.
